Whew...

My biggest surprise was that he got me a Wii!! Yep, a Wii. I knew I would get one—eventually however, I did not expect him to be able to get one for Christmas. I love to play video games especially Mario and Zelda so I always get the latest Nintendo gaming system. I personally own a Gamecube and a Nintendo DS. (I do share with my kids, but they are mine!!) Anyway the Wii was a shock. He did not wait overnight in line at the store on its release day or anything crazy like that. He has a friend who works at Best Buy who gave him an inside tip on a shipment coming in of 50 and he got there in time to be number 42. So I am the proud owner of a Wii with extra accessories and the game Zelda: The Twilight Princess. The Wii does come with Wii Sports. Now I am not a sports person at all, but I have really enjoyed bowling and golfing with the Wii. This game gets you off the couch and into the action. We all have sore arms from swing the remote. It is very fun.

Checking in

Hope everyone is doing well and staying on track preparing for Christmas. The realization of the number of days until Christmas has hit me now. I have been under the weather and now I am behind. I haven't had the opportunity to catch up on blogs so I will try to do that this weekend. I have posted some new pics in my photo albums on my Yahoo 360 page. In the Christmas '06 album I have pictures of our new tree and of the decorations around the house. I have also created a new folder called "What I am working on" in that folder I have posted pics of a couple of in the hoop embroidered towel holders I have made. I will post more pics as I finish projects. Have a good day.

I also posted some new pics in my photo album on my 360 page under "Christmas 06" I will post more as December moves along. Also, while you are there take my 360 poll.

BTW: Happy Birthday Mom!! I know you are celebrating with the Savior (She passed away 1/5/01)

I'm getting so excited!!!

As I write this it is 2:00 in the afternoon and 76 degrees with a Tornado watch. Relief is on the way!! The weather people are predicting falling temps and SNOW!!! Woo-hoo!! Happy Happy Joy Joy!! By this time tomorrow it will be in the 20’s (and hopefully about 6 inches of snow on the ground) !! Welcome winter weather. Bring on the snow!! Can you tell my mood is changing? Now I am ready to finish decorating for Christmas. I went out and did a large portion of my Christmas shopping today so I need to wrap present to put under the tree. Mike and the kids put up the Christmas tree this past Saturday, but I still have my fall decorations on the fireplace and coffee table etc. However, with the cold weather coming in—I feel inspired so bye bye fall!! Tomorrow I will make a pot of Gumbo. Life is good.

Have a great day!

Thanksgivng and Black Friday

I do have a lot to be thankful for and I am very thankful even if the warm weather makes me grumpy!! I have a great husband, great kids (most days LOL), and a nice home. I really truly have everything I need. In addition one of the many things I am thankful for is that I don’t have to work retail on Black Friday anymore. I did that for many, many years and it is such a blessing to not have to do that anymore. I do not leave the house on black Friday, sales or no sales; I would rather pay more and be able to shop when I don’t get so angry. Black Friday takes all of the Joy out of Christmas shopping to me.

Update on my Dad, Chenille and other things.

My dad started his cancer treatment last Wednesday. All went really well for him. He ran a slight fever on Wednesday night but that quickly passed. The doctor said a low-grade fever is a good thing, it indicates that his body is fighting. He has been a little run down but overall he is doing well. He will have treatment every Wednesday for 4 weeks.

Mike and I are getting out of town alone for the weekend. My mother-in-law is going to stay at our house while we are gone so the girls can take care of the puppy. She is too young to be kenneled. It is our birthday’s (we are 2 days apart) and we like to get away and do "couple" things instead of "parent" things. I am looking forward to it. It is always nice to get away before the big rush of the holidays. Have a great day!

The Conference, Lymphoma and other things

In other news, my dad got the results back on his biopsy. He has Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma so now he needs to see an Oncologist to determine a course of treatment. Please keep him in your prayers. My father is 79 years old and still a very strong man he has beat cancer twice and is in relatively good health. He is a large man of about 6’4” and fiercely independent. He is not discouraged by this diagnosis, he is glad to finally know what has been dragging him down. Now he can face it and treat it.

About my Dad.

In the midst of all my conference planning a couple other events have taken place in my life. I have already posted about the new puppy, so now I will catch up on the other big things I have been dealing with. My father and I have a sort of strained relationship. I love my dad but he is best taken in small doses. We only live about 5 minutes away from my dad yet I only see him every 3 weeks or so. The less time we spend together, the less time he has to hurt my feelings. Even though my father makes me feel like I am incompetent, he always relies on me when something goes on in his life.

Pressing on to Victory!!

I was taught that your word is your commitment and you honor that. If you make a promise to someone that you are going to do something, you do it. You keep your promise unless, of course, an unexpected emergency occurs. To me, it is so simple; don’t volunteer unless you know you can honor your commitment. Well, things were tough on Tuesday and Wednesday, but God has been faithful to provide as we have been faithful to ask and do His will. I know that this year’s conference will be exactly what God intends for it to be in spite of the interference of the enemy and many women who attend will receive an enormous blessing.

Triskaidekaphobia

Triskaidekaphobia is a fear of the number 13. It is usually considered to be a superstition. A specific fear of Friday the 13th is called paraskavedekatriaphobia or friggatriskaidekaphobia. (Say that 3 times fast!! Whew!) The fear of the number 13 can be traced back as far as medieval times.

Of course everyone knows that I love all things mysterious and urban legend like. So today is a perfect day to read about things like this. I enjoy myths, superstitions and legends however I don’t “believe” in many of them. I think it is fun to read about how people react to things and how things have shaped our culture, even if the reasons are a little crazy.

For example one of the things I find weird is that tall buildings will skip numbering the floor with 13. However, numbered or not, the floor is still the 13th floor. Hmmmm….

You can read more about Triskaidekaphobia on my Yahoo 360 blog.

Moving into high gear

We had a great weekend in Branson. Good food and lots of fun. We stayed at a nice hotel, but no matter how nice it is I never sleep well away from home. I am glad to be back in my own bed. Since we came back we have been busy with school projects. My youngest daughter just had a product market at school. A product market is where kids make items and sell them for fake money. They also earn this “money” throughout the year for things like good behavior and good grades. Anyway they can use this “money” plus the money they make selling their wares to buy things from their friends at the product market. It is very fun for the kids. Of course B is only in 3rd grade so a lot of the responsibility falls on me. Reluctantly, I helped make the pencil toppers and survived it. VBG!! Helping with school projects and I don’t really mix. . I don’t volunteer for or do anything that will make me “involved” at school. I don’t attend PTA meetings or help at parties. I will send a bag of chips occasionally but that is as involved as I get. Both my girls make good grades and stay out of trouble so it is easy for me to avoid actually having to go into the school. Okay, I am not a total grump, I do attend parent teacher conferences and assemblies. LOL!!

Tuesday we had a Transformations Ministries meeting regarding the upcoming Women’s conference. My oldest daughter is going to help with conference so she attended the meeting with me. We are putting the final details into place. Now the work begins. I just received the first installment of lyrics for the Power point slides that the Praise leader is going to use. I think this year’s conference will be a great success. We are hoping to have around 250 women there this year. This is a ministry that I have been with for many years now but despite my involvement, only one of my friends and none of my family ever attend. So I never sell any tickets for it. How sad is that? I always tell Kathy, I will take a few tickets but it doesn’t do any good because I don’t have any friends!! Sure enough I bring back all but one of the tickets every year. Oh well maybe this year someone else I know will come. Don’t worry, I won’t hold my breath. LOL!!

Have a great weekend.

Getting away from it all.

It has been a busy couple of weeks. I haven't kept up with writing on my blog lately. It seems I just can't focus enough to post. Lately, I have been helping plan a Women's conference that
Transformations Ministries will have here in Northwest Arkansas in few weeks. I have been a part of Transformations Ministries for many years now. I have watched ministry members come and go. I used to be on the board of directors for the ministry but the board switched directions and now I am part of the planning committee. This is our 3rd annual women's conference. I have known Kathy Flammang, the ministry founder, even before Transformations Ministries began. She is an incredible speaker with a great passion for what she does. I personally help with a lot of the media for the ministry. My job for the conference is not one that I can do ahead of time. A lot of the media items do not come together until days before the conference. So as many of the committee members are slowing down, my work load begins to pick up. That's okay though, I work better under pressure!! If you ever get a chance to hear Kathy speak...GO!! I promise you will be very glad you did.

This weekend I am spending time with my family. My husband, Kids, mother-in-law and myself are going to take a weekend trip to Branson Missouri. Branson is only about 1 hour and 45 minutes away. Since I have a sun disease and as most of you know I hate the warm weather, we usually do our fun stuff during the cooler months. Branson is home to Silver Dollar City and Celebration City. We plan to go to both. Branson is a good weekend vacation spot. The temperatures are supposed to be in the low 70's, I can handle that. It will be good to get away from the house for a few days. We plan to leave after school today. The kids are out of school on Friday, so this should be a nice 3 day weekend. Then starting next Monday things go into high gear for my part of the conference. Once the conference is over, I will start planning for Christmas. Did you realize Christmas is only 87 days away!! WOW!
I am off to pack the car now, have a great weekend and God Bless.

More Unexplained

Nessie, Champ, Ogopogo, Manipogo: Monsters of the water

Much like Bigfoot the existence of these creatures have yet to be proven. However there have been many tales throughout time about giant sea creatures. These animals or creatures are thought to be larger than life and therefore they can’t be real, or can they?

If you want to play, here are the rules:
  1. Grab the nearest book.
  2. Open the book to page 123.
  3. Find the fifth sentence.
  4. Post the text of the next 3 sentences on your Blog (Please include the book and author) along with these instructions.

My book is "Sightings" by Susan Michaels.

Suddenly, the object started toward them. It appeared to accelerate with tremendous speed. "We drove on, and this object started chasing us, " Patrick explains.

Why the english language is so hard to learn.

Leave your comments here, come on people talk to me!!

Monday, July 24, 2006

Why is it that fingers don't fing?

Let's face it - English is a crazy language

There is no egg in eggplant nor ham in hamburger; neither apple nor pine in pineapple. English muffins weren't invented in England or French fries in France. Sweetmeats are candies while sweetbreads, which aren't sweet, are meat. We take English for granted. But if we explore its paradoxes, we find that quicksand can work slowly, boxing rings are square and a guinea pig is neither from Guinea nor is it a pig. And why is it that writers write but fingers don't fing, grocers don't groce and hammers don't ham? If the plural of tooth is teeth, why isn't the plural of booth beeth? One goose, 2 geese. So one moose, 2 meese? One index, 2 indices? Doesn't it seem crazy that you can make amends but not one amend? If you have a bunch of odds and ends and get rid of all but one of them, what do you call it? If teachers taught, why didn't preachers praught? If a vegetarian eats vegetables, what does a humanitarian eat?

Here are some facts:
  • 60% of Urban School Children do not graduate from High School. 40% of those who do read at only a 4th grade level.

  • The United States is 49th in the world in literacy (the NewYork Times, Dec. 12, 2004).

  • Only 30% of 4th graders are proficient readers, 26% proficient in math, 18% proficient in history, and the USA ranks significantly lower than other nations in science and math achievement.
